Doves, Pigeons

General observations

Doves and Pigeons are the only birds that do not recline their heads backwards while drinking, thus scooping up water with their bills. Instead, they suckle. This can be seen in photos of various species.

Doves and Pigeons are also the only birds to have special wing feathers that produce a swishing sound upon takeoff. This is a feature designed to temporarily surprise a potential predator while the, comparatively heavy, birds make their escape.
